A new study has found that China’s Gen-Z is overwhelmingly positive about generative AI. Instead of worrying about potential risks, they are focused on how to use the technology to make money and reduce loneliness.
The report, published by the research institute Just So Soul, surveyed nearly 3,500 young Chinese, with 80% of respondents belonging to Gen-Z. The findings contrast sharply with attitudes in the West, where AI skepticism is more common.
High AI Adoption Among Gen-Z
According to the study, over 90% of young Chinese have used generative AI tools, and nearly 18% of those born after 2000 use AI daily. Text generation tools like ChatGPT are the most popular.
More than 60% of respondents said they “like” or “love” AI, while fewer than 3% expressed dislike. This is an increase from last year’s survey, where 43% had a positive view of AI.
AI as a Money-Making Tool
Over half of the young people surveyed said they either already make money using AI or plan to do so. The most common industries using AI for income include advertising, communications, and the arts.
Despite restrictions on foreign AI tools in China, a shadow market has emerged. Vendors offer access to overseas AI platforms or generate content for clients. For example, illustrators have been using Midjourney to create AI-generated artwork for businesses.
AI as a Social Companion
Beyond financial opportunities, many young Chinese see AI as a way to combat loneliness. Around one-third of respondents said they were open to making friends with AI bots.
Younger users were the most receptive, with nearly 33% of those born after 2000 enjoying conversations with AI companions. They cited AI’s ability to chat without awkwardness, respond quickly, and discuss any topic.
AI companionship is gaining popularity in China. Microsoft’s AI girlfriend Xiaoice has millions of users, and “griefbots” that simulate deceased relatives have become widely available.
The study suggests that China’s younger generation views AI as a tool for both professional and personal enrichment. While concerns about job displacement exist, efficiency and convenience appear to outweigh the risks. As AI technology advances, its role in daily life is likely to grow even further.
