Baidu makes a massive step towards gaining organic visibility in Google. Yes, you read that right, “China’s Google” uses SEO to dominate the SERPs of the actual Google. And they’re achieving it through AI translations of Baidu Baike (also called BaiduWiki), China’s largest online encyclopedia.
5 Languages, Millions of Pages
The international version, BaiduWiki, was launched in 5 languages: English, Japanese, French, Spanish, and Russian. The translated versions were officially published on January 30th, 2026, and by February 1st there were more than a million pages live. The content represents a selection of original Chinese Baike articles that were translated using Baidu’s own AI model, ERNIE BOT, among other AI tools.
Baidu Baike originally launched in 2006, following the Chinese government’s decision to censor Wikipedia in 2005. It currently hosts over 30 million entries. Unlike Wikipedia, it is a semi-regulated platform owned by the tech giant Baidu. It’s currently the primary knowledge source for the Chinese-speaking world and it frequently dominates Baidu SERPs, and soon might overtake Google SERPs too.
What Does Baidu’s International Expansion Mean
This move is a massive step in Baidu’s “Global AI” strategy. The translated content meets all the Google SEO standards, including programmatic efforts around the meta data, as well as well-implemented hreflang. This is especially interesting, considering that Baidu itself does not recognise hreflang, as explained in our recent piece.
Baidu are positioning themselves to challenge Western platforms with a large-scale AI content deployment, potentially the largest one that might actually work for a long-term SEO strategy, considering that the content is original and provides unique value around China-related topics, from music and pop-culture to history or art. Interestingly, the surge in visibility correlates with the Core Update rollout, however since the content is very fresh, it’s hard to say if it’s the update or rather other forces in play. The domain has only started getting indexed by Google very recently.
SEO Impact Doesn’t Go Unnoticed
English users are suddenly seeing a massive surge in visibility for Baidu Baike. It’s a trend that caught the SEO world off guard. Here is Lily Ray flagging the major visibility surge via Sistrix, potentially due to the Core Update roll out:

It’s still early days for Baidu’s presence in Google SERPs. Are their other content projects going to launch internationally? And is the newly gained visibility going to last? Let us know what are you predictions and follow International Search News for more updates on this topic.
