AI Integration Challenges Traditional Players
The adoption of DeepSeek signals the struggles of internet giants in keeping pace with advanced AI models. DeepSeek’s strong performance, cost efficiency, and usability have surpassed many in-house AI projects, pushing companies like Tencent and Baidu to incorporate third-party solutions.
At the same time, these tech giants are strategically using DeepSeek to strengthen their platforms. Instead of competing directly, they are integrating external AI advancements to reinforce their market positions.
Data Fragmentation Limits AI Potential
Despite AI advancements, integrating AI models into real-world applications remains a challenge due to data silos. According to IDC, 73% of Chinaās internet industry data is controlled by major players like Tencent, Alibaba, and ByteDance. However, cross-platform data sharing is minimal, with interconnectivity below 5%.
This fragmentation prevents AI from creating comprehensive user profiles. E-commerce data from Taobao and JD.com remains separate from social media activity on Douyin and Weibo. Similarly, financial transactions on Alipay are not linked to user behavior on other platforms.
Search engines face a similar challenge. While AI models like Kimi and Zhipu can retrieve online information, they often lack access to private or proprietary content. Tencentās AI assistant, Yuanbao, is one of the few capable of tapping into exclusive WeChat content, while Baiduās extensive ecosystem gives it an advantage in handling multi-functional user interactions.
DeepSeekās Growing Influence
DeepSeek-R1 has disrupted this landscape with high performance at a lower cost. It has quickly expanded across industries, including smart hardware, media, automotive, and semiconductors. This success highlights a growing trend: only a few dominant AI models may emerge as market leaders, and DeepSeek is positioning itself as one of them.
Tencent and Baiduās strategy of integrating external AI while maintaining control over user ecosystems mirrors Googleās approach with Android. Google keeps Android open-source but dominates through services like Google Play and YouTube. Similarly, Chinese tech giants may rely on third-party AI models while reinforcing their platforms through proprietary services.
Despite integrating DeepSeek, Tencent and Baidu continue investing in their own AI projects. Tencent recently updated its AI assistant, Yuanbao, and introduced a new inference model, Hunyuan-T1, designed for complex reasoning tasks. This suggests that while external AI models are valuable, major tech companies are not abandoning their in-house AI development.
