Roskomnadzor, Russia’s federal communications watchdog, reported significant Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks targeting its resources.
According to RIA Novosti, the attacks had a capacity of 578.57 Gbit/s and a speed of 50.76 million packets per second. The incidents were first recorded on October 8, 2024.
The agency’s press service indicated that the main traffic spikes came from international sources. Despite the intensity of the attacks, Roskomnadzor confirmed that its services, including its main website, remain operational without restrictions.
At 18:45 on Tuesday, some users experienced issues accessing the Roskomnadzor website. The monitoring service Downdetector.su reported 818 complaints related to the outage, with most users citing difficulties accessing the website. A small percentage of complaints involved personal account issues or the mobile app. Notably, some users used the hashtag #FREEDISCORD in their reports.
The disruption followed Roskomnadzor’s earlier decision to block the Discord platform in Russia for violating local legal requirements. This move prompted public reactions, including a call from State Duma Deputy Speaker Vladislav Davankov to reconsider the ban. Davankov argued that Discord is an important tool for students and educators and that no adequate alternative exists.
